How lucky are we living in Auckland to have the opportunity to stay in the hotel with our colleagues from MIT26! This gave us the chance to connect and get to know each other a little better—the first time seeing everyone again since the Kick Start Hui. We went out for dinner, and Auckland still amazes me at night with its vibrancy and beauty.

We met at Lawn Café for a quick coffee and breakfast before heading into the KPMG building, our hosts for the in-person hui for MIT26. To be honest, I was a little nervous about what to expect, but so excited to learn from legends like Matt and Dorothy.
First up, we did the WWW:
What has emerged to add clarity and confirmation to my thinking?
Talking to and asking relevant questions of staff and students across both spectrums of their learning journey. This confirmed my hunch regarding the core challenges and how students actually want to learn.
What has challenged or confronted my thinking?
The "how"—how I will make it possible for teachers to access my thinking and ideas, what specific elements to include (without making it too broad), and how I can build teacher capability so students succeed.
What HMW statement am I currently confirming?
How might we support and empower students to develop reading fluency and enjoyment so they can confidently apply these skills across other areas of learning?
We spent a very busy day at KPMG. We continued by sharing our Prototype Planning documents. This was a valuable experience, as the feedback from colleagues helped clarify what we truly want to achieve. My primary takeaway was the need to be explicitly clear that the tool remains laser-focused on reading fluency and enjoyment for the students.
After sharing and receiving feedback, we were treated to a lovely lunch before getting right back to work. It was time to start designing our prototypes! Since attending our first hui at KPMG, I have already created a prototype and sent it out to be tested by my lovely students.
Just before we went home, Matt gave us a fun challenge: we had to design our MIT26 logo, which will be printed on our t-shirts when we share our projects with other teachers and principals at the Wānanga in October. This was a fantastic exercise, and as a team, we came up with some pretty amazing ideas that truly reflect who we are.
